Ohio State has looked unstoppable through the first month of the season, but Michigan might have the best win of either team.
That’s why USA Today’s Nicole Auerbach says the Wolverines are the “team to beat” in the Big Ten.
“Clearly, the Buckeyes have done nothing but win all their games, and they’ve looked quite good doing it. But Oklahoma is the best team they’ve faced, and the Sooners are nowhere near as good as we thought they were going to be this year. Which means that Michigan’s win against Wisconsin means more; the Badgers are legit. And the Wolverine defense might very well be the best in the nation by season’s end.
“There are kinks to work out, like the running game and the kicking game, but there is so much to like about this Michigan team — and its coach, who’s known for player development and squeezing the most talent out of the roster he has.
“It should be obvious that Michigan and Ohio State are Playoff-caliber teams, at least from what we’ve seen so far. And though there’s no faults to find with the Buckeyes, we’re going to give the edge to the team with the most impressive victory thus far. And that’s Michigan, over Wisconsin.”
The Ohio State defense has allowed just two defensive touchdowns the Buckeyes have scored at least 45 points in each of its first four games. The Buckeyes shut out Rutgers, 58-0, on Saturday. As noted by Auerbach, their best win came at Oklahoma, a decisive 45-24 victory on Sept. 17.
Michigan labored through the first half against Colorado before winning 45-28 on Sept. 17, and needed a strong defensive effort to beat Wisconsin on Saturday. But than that, the Wolverines have looked like a playoff-caliber team.
The polls currently have Ohio State ranked second, Michigan fourth. These two will settle the score on Nov. 26 in Columbus, Ohio.
