Michigan made an impact – again – with Nico Collins
Pinson (Ala.) 4-star WR Nico Collins took his fourth visit to Ann Arbor on Saturday for the game against Maryland. Collins, a heavy Michigan lean, is deciding from the options of Alabama, Michigan and Georgia, and he still plans to announce on National Signing Day.
For Collins, it’s been all Michigan since his visit in June. Michigan will likely get an in-home visit with him in January, but the staff had its last shot to show him what a game inside the Big House looks, and feels, like.
“That was the greatest atmosphere I have ever been in,” Collins said.
Collins entered the Big House, a place far from Pinson, with a smile as wide as the bleachers that look down at the stadium’s turf. He walked down the sidelines, accompanied by Michigan assistant Bam Richards — also an Alabama native — and as he was walking the back of the end zone, he looked up, and heard an entourage of Michigan fans scream his name.
“It was the greatest thing I’ve ever heard,” Collins said of that moment.
The nation’s No. 13 wide receiver stands 6-feet-5, and mirrors a play-style similar to that of former Michigan WR Braylon Edwards.
And he said Saturday’s visit was his best yet.
Michigan targets with decisions nearing
Jaylen Kelly-Powell, 4-star DB, Detroit and Ambry Thomas, 4-star DB, Detroit — Detroit’s best set of cousins have been rumored to be announcing their decisions together. It’s also worth noting that they’ve always said that they want to play at the next level together. Kelly-Powell is as close as you can get to a lock to choose Michigan, in my opinion, while Thomas is still stuck between Michigan and Michigan State. I still think both end up choosing the Wolverines.
Alex Leatherwood, 5-star OT, Pensacola (Fla.) — Leatherwood is set to make his decision next month. He’s committed to Alabama but has flirted with Michigan A LOT. He visited for the Wisconsin game Oct. 1 and it doesn’t sound like he will have time to visit again. With that in mind, I think he sticks with the Crimson Tide.
Tarik Black, 4-star WR, Cheshire (Conn.) — Black is visiting Alabama this weekend. He said he wanted to make his decision during the season, then announce it after his season ends. He’s down to Alabama, Auburn and Michigan, but it looks to be heavily between the Wolverines and Tide. The visit this weekend will say a lot about his decision, but if I had to pick, I’d go with the Wolverines — and with some good confidence in that prediction.
Brad Hawkins will visit for the first time since last season
Camden (N.J.) 4-star WR Brad Hawkins committed to Michigan as a part of the 2016 class. Due to not qualifying, Hawkins was forced to attend prep school during the offseason, but has stayed committed to Michigan. Even his Twitter bio reads: “Michigan commit 2017.” So, it’s apparent that the staff will take his commitment, and he’ll become a part of the 2017 class.

Hawkins’ status as to whether he will enroll or not will likely be known for sure come spring time after he sends his transcripts from prep school to the university. But he will be in Ann Arbor on Nov. 19 for the Indiana game.
As for now, he’s been a commitment for over a year.
