Michigan is on the road this week, but they always find a way to keep the recruiting trail busy.
Chuck, Chuck, Chuck
Aledo (Texas) 4-star offensive lineman Chuck Filiaga’s active recruitment by Michigan has been widely reported after the Wolverines seemed to be at the bottom of the bunch. The Wolverines made a big impact last week, and it seemed like his mother was having a blast on the sidelines with him. Filiaga, a longtime USC favorite, watched Michigan defeat the top-10 Wisconsin Badgers in a stadium that was as loud as it has ever been.
The growing connection between Filiaga and Michigan has a lot smoke, and now seems to have a lot of fire, too.
There is no question Filiaga loved his visit, but so do most recruits. Few walk out of a visit saying “that visit was terrible.” But with USC struggling, and Filiaga’s positive response to his first trip to the Midwest, the Wolverines may be the favorite to land him as of right now.
Hurricane changes plans
Detroit Cass Tech 5-star wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones announced he is taking an official visit to Ohio State this Saturday. Originally, he planned to officially visit Florida, but Hurricane Matthew has postponed that game and his visit. The Gators are considered the Wolverines’ biggest competition for Peoples-Jones.
Now, Peoples-Jones heads to Columbus to watch the Buckeyes take on Indiana. This means pretty much what it sounds like: Peoples-Jones needed some place to go, and the Buckeyes have a home game, so he chose there. Are they really competitors for him? No one is going to count out the Buckeyes, but they’re realistically in third- or fourth-place for him with a lot of ground to make up. One weekend shouldn’t provide that kind of time.
Peoples-Jones is still a Michigan lean, and it’s starting to get closer to his December commitment date.
Jordan Anthony nugget
Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy 4-star linebacker Jordan Anthony was one of the many highly ranked visitors last weekend. But we didn’t hear too much about Anthony because of the “Fab Five” of offensive linemen that visited. Anthony, a top-100 player nationally, is one of three top targets for Michigan at linebacker. Kennedale (Texas) 5-star recruit Baron Browning, who they likely won’t land, and Paramus Catholic (N.J.) 4-star recruit Drew Singleton, who Michigan is favored to land over Clemson, are the other two.
Anthony visited for the spring game, and the Wolverines walked away from that visit in the lead. That lead never faded, and the most recent visit only helped. He has a great relationship with Jim Harbaugh, and really loved that, before the game, the coach showed up to give the visitors pizza and ice cream at a food truck in front of the stadium.
There may be some extenuating circumstances that are delaying an Anthony commitment, but those involved believe it should work itself out and that Michigan is a strong favorite.
