Tom Crean was fired by Indiana, but the former basketball coach isn’t afraid to share memories about his time with the Hooisers. Especially when they involve Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh, who is his brother-in-law.
When Crean hopped on the Pardon My Take podcast, which was released Wednesday, he explained how Harbaugh tried to fire up the Hoosiers after a loss to Michigan in January 2012. After the former San Francisco 49ers coach lost in the NFC Championship Game, he arrived on campus and suggested to Crean that the basketball managers buy some live bats.
“You gotta play like vampire bats,” Crean recalled Harbaugh saying in practice. “There’s no question we checked into it [purchasing live bats], but what we found was some plastic vampire bats. In my pregame speech [against Purdue], I just started throwing them around the locker room.”
Unfortunately, owning a pet bat in the state of Indiana is illegal.
Later on, Crean discussed how he might become a sports broadcaster.
