Steve Spurrier sat down with AL.com for an interview this week. He was asked 20 wide-ranging questions, and a few of them involved the Big Ten.
Spurrier, who led Florida to six SEC titles and also coaches at South Carolina until 2015, was asked about Jim Harbaugh’s glasses and a big play involving Harbaugh’s team from last week. Here’s an excerpt:
12. Q: Jim Harbaugh has gone from the pros to college and found success. What do you think of his glasses?
SS: “Well, he certainly needs them.”
13. Q: Did J.T. Barrett make that first down or not?
SS: “I think it could have been called either way, but I tell you what, that referee did not hesitate. He went right up there and put that foot right on the line. And then you really couldn’t see on replay. It’s amazing with all the angles they have and you still couldn’t see it.”
Spurrier was also asked about the potential of a defensive player winning the Heisman. Spurrier said that he couldn’t recall voting for a defender while he was a head coach, but he is not opposed to the idea.
“Jabrill Peppers, if they had beaten Ohio State and he had a big play or two in it, I think certainly he would be up there with the other guys who are considered right now. It appears to be sort of wide open right now after Lamar [Jackson] lost a couple games towards the end there.”
