When the sun rises tomorrow, it will be National Signing Day. To some it’s Christmas morning, to others, well, they’re just glad it’s finally over.
Here are some updates and predictions for each of Michigan’s final six targets ahead of the final day of the 2017 cycle.
Aubrey Solomon, 5-star DT
A 247Sports Composite 5-star, Lee County (Ga.) DT Aubrey Solomon the top target left on Michigan’s board. A former commitment to the Wolverines in the summer, Michigan has put itself in a spot to regain his pledge.
Michigan’s relationship with Solomon’s family is far ahead of any other school. But things took a turn when Alabama’s Nick Saban visited Solomon on Jan. 27 at his school. While that made an impact, Land of 10 still doesn’t see the late push from the Tide being enough to sway Solomon away from the school to which he originally committed. Michigan possesses 18 of the last 19 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions on Solomon.
On Monday night, a source close to Lee County told Land of 10 that, as of Monday night, the plans are still for Solomon to choose Michigan. But, as erratic as he is, anything can happen in the next 24 hours.
Jay Tufele, 4-star DT
The 4-star recruit from South Jordan (Utah) once was a heavy Ohio State favorite.
On Oct. 22, he visited Michigan, and things began to look bright for the Wolverines. But they still seemed to sit in second place, behind the Buckeyes.
Now things have taken a turn for the worse for both programs. Tufele looks like he’ll choose either Utah or USC. We said all along it would be tough in the end to pull Tufele away from the West Coast.
His last official visit was to Utah, the school that’s highly favored in his 247Sports Crystal Ball as of late.
Willie Gay, 4-star LB
Was Gay, at one point during the fall, a silent commit to Michigan? There’s reason to believe that’s true. But silents before the final week – and in some cases, even in the final week – are worthless. And that’s being seen first-hand with Gay.
A source in Baton Rouge told Land of 10 on Friday that Gay has been vocal about his intentions. And for him to choose a school other than LSU would be surprising. The source added that should it not be LSU, it’ll be Mississippi State. Michigan could make some late noise, but expect this one to stay down South.
Nico Collins, 4-star WR
The 247Sports Composite 4-star WR prospect was thought to be a Michigan favorite from the early summer until December.
It all changed when the weather did, as Georgia has led for the entire winter — a school that has recruited him for two years.
For the entire month of January, nearly every outlet had Collins tabbed to the Bulldogs. But suddenly on Sunday night, things took a turn.
A source close to Collins said that it doesn’t look like he will attend Georgia. That leaves Alabama and Michigan, but, the Tide have backed off. So, really, it leaves the school that has always been there: Michigan.
The Wolverines have a substantial lead for his 247Sports Crystal Ball following six new predictions in the last three days.
Mekhi Becton, 3-star OT
This one is down to Michigan and Virginia Tech. The Wolverines began to recruit him as Plan B, but when Isaiah Wilson went to Georgia on Dec. 22, Becton became Plan A.
Michigan has led since then, but a visit to Virginia Tech last week gave the Hokies the advantage. That resulted in multiple Crystal Ball predictions of Becton choosing the Hokies.
A visit from Harbaugh and Tim Drevno last Tuesday might have given the Wolverines the lead once again. Becton told Land of 10 it’s “possible” that Michigan leads, and that the staff showed him a depth chart, explaining the need for him on the roster.
But things just look too optimistic on the Hokies’ side to not be a little wary on the Wolverines’ chances. Tech is the in-state school, the one that always recruited him and he’ll have a great chance to play. And that means a lot to the 6-foot-7 tackle.
Prediction: Virginia Tech
