Michigan plays for conference tournament positioning when it faces Maryland in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Wolverines continue to secure their spot for a berth in the NCAA Tournament, but the more important matter at hand is earning seeding for the Big Ten Conference tournament. Michigan needs to beat Maryland and Penn State needs to beat Nebraska on Sunday, in order for the Wolverines to earn a double bye in the Big Ten tournament. The conference tournament begins Feb. 28 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The top four teams earn a double-bye in the conference tournament and directly advance to the quarterfinals.
In Wednesday’s win at Penn State, the Wolverines went 16 for 19 on free throws against the Nittany Lions, including 13 for 14 in the second half. Penn State cut Michigan’s lead to 4 points (58-54) with less than 3 minutes left in the game. The Wolverines opened their lead back to 9 points about a minute and a half later, as Abdur-Rahkman and Duncan Robinson combined for the next 2 baskets, including one of Robinson’s 3 3-pointers.
Maryland is 15-2 at the Xfinity Center this season, and looks to close the regular season with its third consecutive win. Anthony Cowan leads the Terrapins in scoring with 15.7 points per game, ahead of Kevin Huerter (14.7 points) and Bruno Fernando (10.1 points).
Huerter led Maryland with 18 points in a 71-64 road win Monday at Northwestern, as Maryland won its first road game since Dec. 3.
