Villanova vs. Michigan in the 2018 National Championship Game will be the fourth meeting in the all-time series between two college basketball powers.
The game will be broadcast at 9:20 p.m. ET on TBS Monday night. Villanova’s going for its third championship in three years, while Michigan is looking for its first title since 1989.The past won’t have an impact on this game, but let’s check out how the previous meetings between these two programs have gone.
2014: Villanova 60, Michigan 55
The team’s most recent meeting came in the 2014 Legends Championship, a Thanksgiving tournament in New York. That Nova team had several players who would go on to star for the Wildcats’ 2016 championship team, including Josh Hart, Ryan Arcidiacono, Kris Jenkins, Phil Booth and Daniel Ochefu.
JayVaughn Pinkston sealed the Villanova win with a bucket and a block in the final minute. Dylan Ennis was Nova’s leading scorer with 15 points, while Caris Levert led Michigan with 16.
That season, Villanova went on to win the Big East Tournament before getting bounced from the NCAA Tournament by North Carolina in the second round. Michigan did not have a successful season, finishing 16-16 in what was a rebuilding season for the Wolverines.
1985: Villanova 59, Michigan 52
This meeting came in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats were able to end Michigan’s season on their way to the National Championship Game, where they secured their first-ever tournament title.
No. 8-seed Villanova was able to pull the upset over the No. 1-seed Wolverines thanks to 20 points from leading scorer Dwayne McClain.
1970: Michigan 103, Villanova 87
Michigan’s lone win in the all-time series came almost 40 years ago. Villanova was ranked No. 11 while Michigan was unranked, but the Wolverines ran all over the Wildcats in a blowout. There isn’t much information available on this game, but the loss didn’t harm Villanova’s season. The Wildcats made it all the way to the National Championship Game before falling to UCLA.
And that’s it. Perhaps these teams will meet more often after the championship game.
