Both teams bounced back from first-round losses on Monday with victories on Tuesday. Michigan beat Chaminade 102-64 after losing its opening game to LSU 77-75. VCU routed California 83-69 after losing to Marquette 94-83 on Monday.
Sophomore guard Charles Matthews followed up his 28-point performance against LSU with 22 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the field and 10 rebounds against the Division II Silver Swords. Senior guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman added 17 point on 6-of-8 shooting, while senior forward Duncan Robinson had 14 points. Junior forward Moe Wagner also scored in double figures with 10 points.
Freshman Eli Brooks got the start at point guard against Chaminade as coach John Beilein continues to evaluate the 3-man competition between Brooks, sophomore Zavier Simpson and grad transfer Jaaron Simmons.
VCU guard De’Riante Jenkins had a game-high 27 points for the Rams, who led Cal by as many as 26 points. The Rams outscored Cal 29-10 on fastbreak points as they forced 18 turnovers. They also committed 18 turnovers.
Michigan brings a 4-1 record into the game, while VCU is 3-2. This is the Wolverines’ first trip to the Maui Invitational since 2011, when it finished third.
