ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Carol Hutchins knows something about championships.
In 33 years as Michigan’s softball coach, Hutchins has won an NCAA championship, 19 Big Ten Conference championships and has taken the Wolverines to 12 Women’s College World Series, including three in the last four years.
She set the bar for the football team and for third-year coach Jim Harbaugh on Tuesday at Michigan’s Signing of the Stars, which introduced its incoming 2017 freshman class.
“We know Coach Harbaugh has our football team on track to win a national title,” Hutchins said, before she introduced former Michigan football players Marlin Jackson and Ian Gold.
The Michigan softball team is ranked sixth in the nation in the preseason ESPN/USA Softball collegiate preseason Top 25 poll and is scheduled to open the season Feb. 10 against Delaware in Tampa, Fla. Michigan opens its home schedule at 4 p.m. March 15 against Bowling Green.
Michigan’s softball field, however, is covered in snow this week.
“You probably couldn’t tell we have a game next week,” Hutchins quipped.
