2019 4-star WR George Pickens to officially visit Michigan in June
Hoover (Ala.) 2019 4-star wide receiver George Pickens has been committed to Auburn since July 21, but things could be changing in the near future.
“It’s really open because there’s a lot of new schools coming in,” Pickens, who picked up a Michigan offer in April, said to 247Sports’ John Garcia Jr. “I’m trying to see as many schools as I can right now.”
The 6-foot-5, 199-pound receiver has offers to play for Auburn, Michigan, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Oregon, Arkansas State, Bowling Green, Jacksonville State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and South Carolina.
Pickens has taken unofficial visits to Georgia, Florida and Florida State, so he aims to get out of the Southeast to check out schools in the Big Ten and Pac-12.
His first stop will be an official visit to Michigan from June 8-10.
“My first visit is going to be Michigan, an official, three weekends from now,” Pickens told Garcia Jr. “I’m really looking into Oregon since it’s far, far away, so it will probably be an official. Alabama is probably going to get me on campus soon.
“I’ll be seeing Michigan, Oregon, Florida State, probably South Carolina.”
Pickens’ most recent offer was from Oregon on May 17. The wide receiver said it boosted his confidence because he always wanted to attend a pass-first school.
The Alabama native is ranked No. 95 in the nation, No. 15 at his position and No. 6 in his home state, according to the 247Sports composite.
Including Pickens, Michigan has issued 31 offers to wide receivers in the 2019 class but does not have a commit at the position. Even though there are a number of uncommitted prospects interested in the Wolverines, Michigan’s best chance at a flip commitment is with Pickens.
Michigan has to roll out the red carpet and impress Pickens to the max in order to get him to attend school and play football in Ann Arbor.
Michigan lacks contact with 4-star guard Will Putnam
Tampa (Fla.) Plant 2019 4-star guard William Putnam was once considering Michigan and took a visit after earning an offer on June 20.
Since then, Putnam has fallen away from the Wolverines due to a lack of contact on Michigan’s end. Right now, he is mainly considering Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Auburn, Texas A&M and Florida.
“I don’t know [if I’m considering Michigan],” Putnam said. “They haven’t really been in contact with me.”
The 6-foot-4, 280-pound offensive lineman has offers from 29 schools, including Florida State, Miami, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M and USC.
“I’m not going to pursue a school that isn’t interested in me,” said Putnam, who does not think Michigan wants him.
If Michigan starts contacting Putnam again, he said he does not know if he would be interested. He was offered by former Michigan offensive coordinator Tim Drevno, who left for USC. Once Drevno left, the contact slowed down and eventually stopped.
“It matters on what they have to say,” Putnam said.
The day after he received an offer from Michigan, Putnam said he was “very interested” in coach Jim Harbaugh’s team.
“Michigan is a great team with a great tradition,” Putnam said in June. “Michigan is a school I definitely want to visit. The offer caught me by surprise, so I have not yet planned a visit. However, Michigan is a school I want to build a relationship with.”
It is safe to say that unless the Wolverines act now they will be too late for Putnam. He is ranked No. 97 in the nation, No. 5 at his position and No. 15 in Florida, according to the 247Sports composite.
Of Michigan’s eight 2019 commits, four will play on the offensive line.
