Derek Wingo reflects on Michigan offer, will visit for BBQ
Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas 2020 3-star outside linebacker Derek Wingo is headed to Ann Arbor on July 28 for the BBQ at the Big House.
The Wolverines extended a scholarship offer to Wingo on June 2, then Miami followed suit on June 9.
“I was at the FAU camp competing with most of the Michigan staff all watching me,” Wingo said. “I had been in contact with them previously when they stopped by my school, but this was the first time they were seeing me perform.
“I talked to Coach [Don] Brown a little bit and they loved watching me throughout the whole day. After the camp, my coach let me know they offered.”
The 6-foot-2, 210 pounder has offers to play for Ohio State, Clemson, Oklahoma, Boston College, Cincinnati, FIU, Florida, Florida Atlantic, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Oregon, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Purdue and Texas.
“It’s a relief after finally receiving it,” Wingo said of his offer from Harbaugh’s team. “Michigan is one that I know is going to be in my top schools when it all comes down to decide.”
Now that Wingo has 18 offers and is getting ready to trim his list, he will remain focused on the relationship of the coaches to recruits. He wants a tight-knit bond.
“The biggest thing for me right now is the relationship with the coaches and just the way they make me feel loved at the University of Michigan,” he added.
During his visit to Michigan on July 28, Wingo is looking to find how and where the team sees him fitting in on defense, which comes from deep conversations Brown, Michigan’s well-respected defensive coordinator.
“I’m looking forward to finally getting back to Ann Arbor and to talk with Coach Harbaugh and see how I can fit into Michigan’s type of defense,” Wingo said.
The rising linebacker prospect first visited Michigan when he was in eighth grade. Now, he is looking forward to checking out the school with a different perspective because he has an offer in hand.
“It was one of my first times being on a college campus and Michigan definitely set the bar high,” Wingo said.
Before Wingo makes the journey to Ann Arbor, he will head to Ohio State on June 21.
“Ohio State has been my favorite school since I was a kid,” he said. “I grew up around a lot of people from Columbus. I’m excited to talk with Coach [Urban] Meyer and see the newer facilities they have since I was last there.”
Wingo is ranked No. 261 in the nation, No. 15 at the outside linebacker position and No. 34 in Florida, according to 247Sports.
