Michigan is up to No. 2 in the Land of 10 Power Poll after improving to 2-0 with a 36-14 win against Cincinnati on Saturday.
The Wolverines, ranked No. 7 in the latest AP and Amway coaches polls, were voted No. 3 last week in the season’s inaugural Land of 10 poll by a panel of writers after a 33-17 victory against Florida. Ohio State’s 31-16 loss at home against Oklahoma on Saturday night dropped the Buckeyes (1-1) from the top spot to No. 3 when the latest power poll came out Sunday. Penn State (2-0) took over No. 1 after beating Pittsburgh, 33-14, at home on Saturday.
Michigan got more of a fight from Cincinnati than the final score might indicate. The defense did give up an actual touchdown drive, one not set up by a turnover. It made up for it, however, with interception returns for touchdowns by safety Tyree Kinnel and cornerback Lavert Hill and shutting the Cincinnati offense down twice in the third quarter when the Bearcats had a chance to tie the score or take the lead. The Wolverines added 4 more sacks to give them 10 in two games, plus 7 tackles for loss to go with the 11 they had against Florida.
Wide receiver Grant Perry’s 33-yard touchdown late in the third quarter gave Michigan some breathing room at 24-14. Michigan outgained Cincinnati 414-200 despite running four fewer plays (70-66). Senior running back Ty Isaac rushed for 133 yards, his second consecutive 100-yard game, and seems to have taken over the job as the No. 1 back.
I voted Michigan at No. 2 for the second straight week, this time behind Penn State. While Michigan’s defense has been dominant so far, there have been too many offensive inconsistencies and mistakes in the first two weeks.
The Wolverines fumbled three times and lost two against the Bearcats, one on a punt that hit off a blocker and another on offense. Four drives accounted for 301 of their yards. The other nine possessions totaled 83 yards. Quarterback Wilton Speight is still missing too many throws high.
This team is growing and will get better. Patience is a key word in Jim Harbaugh’s vocabulary at the moment.
