ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Orange Bowl was a losing cause for the Michigan football team, but it became a lucrative endeavor for the coaching staff.
Florida State defeated Michigan 33-32 on Dec. 30 in the Orange Bowl and, as procedure, Michigan’s assistants received bonuses for earning a berth in a New Year’s Six bowl game.
Outside of head coach Jim Harbaugh, who will receive a $200,000 bonus for the Orange Bowl, Michigan’s coaches do not have specific bowl bonus totals written into their contracts. Instead, Michigan has a bowl bonus policy that states that the athletic department will pay football staff members, including coordinators, assistant coaches, and football staff members, a percentage of their individual salaries.
Michigan’s bowl bonus plan, which was last revised in December 2011 and obtained by Landof10 through a Freedom of Information Act request, states that an assistant football coach will receive the equivalent of two months salary for earning a berth in a BCS bowl game — the 2016 season equivalent of a New Year’s Six bowl. The College Football Playoff has designated the Orange Bowl as a New Year’s Six bowl.
For example, Michigan offensive coordinator Tim Drevno earned $800,000 in his second season with the Wolverines, so he would receive a bonus of $133,332.
Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown earned $850,000 and would receive a bonus of $141,666.
(Fox Sports reported earlier this week that Drevno and Brown will receive individual contract extensions worth at least $1.3 million over five years. Michigan, however, has not confirmed the contract extensions for Brown and Drevno, nor has it released the new terms of the contract extensions for the coordinators.)
Here’s a look at what Michigan’s coaching staff will receive for bowl bonuses, under the athletic department’s bowl bonus policy. Salaries are for the 2016 season, as listed in coaching contracts obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, and are prior to taxes.
