Austin (Texas) Lake Travis High School 2020 dual-threat quarterback Hudson Card has been a hot commodity in the recruiting world since his freshman year, so Michigan jumped in with an offer on May 7.
“Coach Jay Harbaugh came to my school and then later that day, I gave him a call and [Michigan] offered me,” Card said. “It means a lot because it’s an awesome school.”
Card played quarterback and wide receiver for Lake Travis as a freshman and sophomore. As a junior, he will start behind center, so Michigan is offering him as a signal caller.
“I would say my athleticism and extending plays are my best attributes,” Card said. “I got a lot to improve on as always, but I’d say those are best.
“[I want to work on] learning the offense more and becoming that leader.”
Card is getting the opportunity to stay at quarterback because 4-star Matthew Baldwin, his former teammate, was a member of the 2018 class, thus overshadowing Card during his first two seasons.
Baldwin signed with Ohio State on Dec. 20. In 2017, he completed 262 of 365 passes for 3,842 yards, 44 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. He also ran the ball 77 times for 418 yards and 9 scores.
The 6-foot-2, 167-pound Card has offers to play for 18 schools, including Michigan, Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Ohio State, Ole Miss, TCU, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.
“[Michigan is] a great place with a great program,” he stated. “The fan base is amazing and so are the coaches. I’ve grown up watching them, so I’ve always been a fan. I’m looking forward to going up there and seeing the campus and everything.”
Card said he will visit the Wolverines “sometime this summer” and hopes to see other schools as well. He said a few are already standing out.
“Nobody can really talk to me yet because I’m a sophomore, but I’d say Texas, Ohio State and some other places as well are recruiting me the hardest,” he said.
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, a former Wolverine and NFL quarterback, is someone Card is excited to get to know throughout his recruitment process.
“He’s a great coach and knows what he’s doing,” Card said. “I’m looking forward to meeting him soon and seeing the facilities.”
Card is ranked No. 170 in the 2020 class, according to 247Sports. He is the second-best dual-threat quarterback and the No. 20 player in Texas.
In the 2017 season, Card completed 57 of 82 passes for 604 yards, 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He ran the ball 66 times for 459 yards and 6 scores. As a receiver, Card logged 69 receptions, 1,137 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The only higher-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 class is Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei 4-star Bryce Young. He does not have an offer to Michigan.
Lake Travis has one of the top 2019 prospects in 5-star wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who is committed to Ohio State. The team also had its 2018 kicker, 3-star Cameron Dicker, sign with Tennessee.
For now, the most famous football player to come out of Lake Travis is Baker Mayfield, who won the 2017 Heisman Trophy and went No. 1 in the 2018 NFL Draft. Mayfield threw for 2,487 yards, 24 touchdowns and 2 interceptions as a high school senior.
Mayfield, ranked No. 1,029 overall, joined Texas Tech as a walk-on out of high school. He started his freshman year. He transferred to Oklahoma as a walk-on and eventually gained a scholarship.
