Jim Harbaugh has made a new addition to his staff, bringing in former Arkansas strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert to replace Kevin Tolbert, according to FootballScoop.
The Wolverines parted ways with Tolbert two weeks ago and now will add a trainer who is well-versed in Big Ten country, having served on Wisconsin’s strength and conditioning staff for 15 seasons.
A Wisconsin alum, Herbert was the Badgers’ strength and conditioning coach for four seasons under Bret Bielema, then followed the coach to Arkansas. While Bielema’s Razorbacks tenure was rocky for all involved, his Wisconsin teams were defined by powerful play on the offensive and defensive lines. Among the players Herbert trained while in Madison are current NFL All-Pros and former first-round picks J.J. Watt and Travis Frederick.
Tolbert had been a Harbaugh mainstay going back to the coach’s days at Stanford, also working for him with the 49ers. He also had served as assistant strength coach with the Wolverines on Lloyd Carr’s staff from 2001-2007.
