ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jim Harbaugh, fashion maven.
Add that to the second-year Michigan coach’s resume.
Harbaugh debuted a new set of glasses Saturday in Michigan’s 41-8 win against Illinois, a throwback style of sorts that evoked Buddy Holly, but a style that Harbaugh said paid homage to actor Michael Douglas in “Falling Down,” black nationalist leader Malcolm X, and legendary Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes.
“I got my eyes checked out a few weeks ago and they said I needed to go to glasses full-time,” Harbaugh said. “As of Tuesday, I’m now a full-time glasses person.”
Harbaugh, one player said, even sought out style advice from one of his bespectacled players.
“He came up to me one day in meetings and said to me, ‘You have glasses! How do you like your glasses?’” freshman TE Tyrone Wheatley Jr. said. “I told him, ‘They help me out. I’ve had them for three years.’
“And he said to me, ‘I have to get glasses. My doctor said I’m too old for contacts.’”
Wheatley offered him one piece of advice: Get a “cool” pair.
Then, Harbaugh came to practice with new glasses, and immediately asked Wheatley for his opinion.
“Those are nice,” Wheatley said. “I like them! They’re stylish.”
CB Jourdan Lewis noticed Harbaugh’s change of style this week, as he wore them during team meetings and practices. He noticed another change of style, too.
“He’s got some different khakis, too,” Lewis said.

Wait. Lewis can tell when Harbaugh has new khakis? All khakis don’t look alike?
“You can tell,” Lewis said. “They’re a little bit snug. But don’t tell him I said that!”
