Michigan continues play in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational with a consolation semifinal matchup against Chaminade. Michigan lost to LSU, 77-75, on Monday night in the first round at the Lahaina Civic Center. Chaminade lost to No. 13 Notre Dame, 83-56, in its first-round game.
Chaminade trailed by just six points, 38-32, early in the second half, but Notre Dame got 27 points and 4 assists from guard Matt Farrell and 23 points and 8 rebounds by forward Bonzie Colson to pull away from the Division II school. Forward Eric Schieve led Chaminade with 17 points.
Michigan trailed by as many as 7 points in the second half but used a 10-0 run to take a 58-53 lead with 8:08 left to play on a 3-pointer by Moe Wagner. The Wolverines built a 68-59 lead but didn’t make a field goal in the final 3:13 as LSU rallied behind freshman point guard Tremont Waters, who scored 21 points and had 4 assists for the Tigers.
Sophomore guard Charles Matthews led Michigan with 28 points and 8 rebounds, and Wagner scored 24 points and had 7 rebounds. Senior guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman had 12 points for the Wolverines but his final 3-point attempt at the buzzer came up short. Michigan made just 6 of 23 3-point attempts for the game and was out-rebounded, 31-29.
Michigan brings a 3-1 record into the game, and Chaminade is 2-1. This is the Wolverines’ first trip to the Maui Invitational since 2011, when it finished third.
