Prior to the NCAA Tournament, Michigan won the Big Ten Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Wolverines carried the momentum from the conference tournament into the NCAA Tournament, where they defeated Montana and Houston in the first and second round, respectively.
Michigan then defeated Texas A&M in the Sweet 16 and Florida State in the Elite 8, punching its ticket to San Antonio to play in the Final Four. There, the Wolverines defeated this year’s Cinderella team, Loyola-Chicago, to earn a bid to the National Championship Game against Villanova. The Wildcats proved to be too much for the Wolverines, though, as Villanova won the title game, 79-62.
Overall, the Wolverines finished the season with an overall record of 33-8.
