Last weekend for visits before dead period
There won’t be the same buzz and excitement around the University of Michigan campus this weekend as last, when the Wolverines hosted quarterback Shea Patterson and others, but they will still be hosting another round of recruits on visits.
- Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson probably already knows all the nooks and crannies of the campus as many times as he’s been there, but the 2018 commit will make his official visit this weekend. He plans on signing his national letter of intent next week when the early signing period opens for a 3-day window beginning Wednesday.
- Wide receiver Chris Olave of San Marcos, Calif., was scheduled for his official visit but had to cancel for what has been termed a “family issue” by Rivals.com. He is rated a 4-star prospect who has also taken visits to Utah and Ohio State. Michigan offered him on Oct. 30. The Wolverines do not have a wide receiver commit for the 2018 class, and it is unclear if Olave’s visit will be rescheduled.
- There have been reports that 4-star safety Jamien Sherwood of Jensen Beach, Fla., is making an official visit. Sherwood is an Auburn commit.

A recruiting dead period where coaches cannot contact players begins Monday and goes until Jan. 11, so this is a last chance to make a good impression before the early signing period opens. It’s also a reason why it will be difficult to reschedule Olave’s visit. He told 247Sports that he plans on visiting Southern California and UCLA in January. Ja’Marr Chase has been a priority target of the Wolverines since before the 4-star prospect from New Orleans changed his commitment from Florida on Nov. 8. Michigan also offered Chase on Oct. 30.
Chase is taking an official visit to TCU this weekend.
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh took assistants Greg Mattison and Jay Harbaugh to Essexville, Mich., for an in-school visit with tight end Ben VanSumeren of Garber High School. The Wolverines offered VanSumeren, an Iowa commit, a scholarship on Thursday after learning that tight end Tommy Tremble of Norcross, Ga., had chosen Notre Dame over them, UCLA and Georgia. VanSumeren played multiple positions for Garber, as evidenced in the video below.
Mustapha Muhammad sets visit date
Tight end Mustapha Muhammad will take his official visit to Michigan on Jan. 19. Muhammad confirmed to Land of 10 on Friday the report by The Michigan Insider.
Muhammad is one of three players committed to Michigan for 2018 who is not expected to sign his national letter of intent this week, along with quarterback Kevin Doyle and linebacker Otis Reese. He committed to the Wolverines on Oct. 20 and does not have any plans to visit other schools.
It’s been a big week for Muhammad. Michigan coaches Jim Harbaugh and Greg Frey made an in-home on Monday. On Wednesday, he was named the Houston Touchdown Club’s Offensive Player of the Year.
