Ahrens was committed to Ohio State when Thad Matta was still the program’s head coach, and reopened his recruitment the day after Matta was fired. He said at that time he was still considering the Buckeyes.
Ahrens announced on Sunday that Michigan had offered him, and three analysts made 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions on Monday that he’d commit to the Wolverines.

Ahrens is a 3-star recruit on the 247Sports Composite, which ranks him as the No. 43 small forward and the No. 7 Ohio player in the Class of 2018. The 6-foot-5, 181-pound prospect is entering his senior season at Versailles High School in Versailles, Ohio. Stony Brook was the only other school that offered him before he committed to Ohio State, but he now has offers from Iowa State, Missouri and Texas A&M among other schools, plus the programs listed in his top 6.
