Jim Harbaugh’s khaki obsession has been well-chronicled, but on Tuesday he revealed a new wrinkle in an interview with GQ’s Clay Skipper.
He used to wear $8 khakis from Walmart, but now wears specific Nike-designed pants as part of his Michigan wardrobe. And Harbaugh doesn’t ditch them in favor of more athletic wear when he goes to the gym.
Here’s the full exchange:
GQ: Do your game day khakis differ from your going out to dinner khakis, or your lounge khakis?
Jim Harbaugh: No. Just pretty much the same one. That’s the best part about them. You can go anywhere and be dressed appropriately: game day, or church, or out to dinner. The movies. I can work out in my khakis. And do. They’re similar to sweatpants. Coaching, (they’re) great because they’ve got pockets to put your pens and scripts. Chewing gum. Et cetera.
The idea that he would go straight from work to the gym without changing fits his character. Harbaugh said khakis streamline his decision-making process, and save him the “good half hour to forty-five minutes a day” he says people take to choose an outfit.
- Harbaugh upset Ohio State fans on Twitter recently after tweeting out a picture of legendary Buckeyes coach Woody Hayes wearing a Michigan hat. He said it was all in good fun.
- He went in-depth on his peanut butter-eating habits following the release of this video of him yelling about peanuts.
- On his relationship with the internet: “I love ’em right back, though!”
His Michigan Wolverines start spring practice on Friday, and will fly to Rome for a spring break trip in April.
