“My dad taught me how to take care of a woman, how to love a woman, how to love my family,” he says. “He taught me to do that by showing me how he did it every day.”
Austin Hatch had one of the most inspiring stories in college sports when he joined Michigan’s basketball team in 2014. A survivor of two plane crashes, Hatch’s story and perseverance through trauma and loss made Wolverines fans fall in love with him.
While in Ann Arbor, Hatch also fell in love. On Friday night, Hatch proposed to his girlfriend, former Michigan volleyball and basketball player Abby Cole.
It was the perfect maize-and-blue match.

It’s a storybook ending at Michigan for Hatch, who has been through extraordinary tragedy in his life. In 2003, his mother and two siblings died in a plane crash in which he and his father survived. In 2011, Hatch was the only survivor in a plane crash that killed his father and stepmother.
Hatch opened up about his personal losses and his relationship with Cole in an interview with People magazine last month.
