Michigan State hasn’t reeled in a football commitment since 4-star 2018 defensive back Xavier Henderson announced his decision on Sept. 9.
It hasn’t gained a 2017 commitment in over three months — at least not publicly — not since 3-star cornerback Josiah Scott pledged to the Spartans on July 31
Hunter Rison, a 4-star jewel of the current senior class, told The Spartan Beat’s Rico Beard that he knows of two silent commits, players who will later join him in publicly announcing their intentions to join the Spartans.
With that knowledge in mind, who will be next to make his Michigan State commitment known? Will it be one of these silent commits, or will a different player announce?
I’ll go with 4-star receiver KJ Hamler, for a number of reasons. First off, he told 247Sports’ Justin Hopkins he intends to make his decision in mid- to late November. He may visit Arizona before doing so, but potentially not.
So we know an announcement’s coming, but why might the diminutive, speedy receiver pick Michigan State? First, his roots. He may attend IMG Academy in Florida, but he hails from Orchard Lake, Mich. The rest of his top five (Arizona, Iowa State, Oregon, Penn State) wouldn’t offer such a homecoming.
Hamler already has taken his official visit, so that’s an indication he may be ready to commit. And should he be one of the silent commits, it would make sense for the Michigan State class to be aware of it, as Hamler’s IMG teammate is MSU tight end commit Jack Camper.
Camper will often yell, “Go, green,” to Hamler on campus, and Hamler will respond, “Go, white.” The two have had an open dialogue about the possibility of playing together in the Michigan State offense.
Hamler has teammates committed to other schools as well. For example, 3-star tight end Tre’ McKitty is committed to Oregon and is surely trying to convince Hamler to join him. But what makes Camper a good recruiter is how rock solid his commitment is.
Hamler doesn’t appear to be fazed by a losing season. Only one of his top five, Penn State, has a winning record this season. So the Spartans shouldn’t be hurt by this year’s struggles.
Might Hamler be a silent commit? Time will tell. But whoever those players are, good on them for staying quiet and taking advantage of the opportunity to get more visits in. You only get this chance once.
