On the banks of the Red Cedar, recruiting never stops. We’re here every step of the way to keep you moving along with it.
Words have stayed rather measured and respectful leading up to the game this weekend.
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh praised Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio’s work in no uncertain terms. Dantonio followed by raving about the versatility of Wolverines superstar Jabrill Peppers.
They’re probably saving the intensity for the field. One team may be undefeated and the other winless in a month and a half. One may be favored by more than 20 points. Regardless, the Michigan-Michigan State rivalry brings out the best in both sides.
It will likely have big implications for the future; a long list of recruiting prospects plan to make the trip to see the game. Here are some of the top prospects, listed by class (all visitors have been confirmed by Land of 10 apart from those for whom an outside source is cited):
Class of 2017
Four-star Michigan State receiver commit Hunter Rison takes his official visit over the weekend. The son of former MSU star Andre Rison, he will be great to have around to help recruit others.
Three-star Michigan State receiver commit Cody White plans to visit Saturday, as he has for every home game. The Walled Lake (Mich.) Western senior has excelled at wideout and quarterback this season.
Three-star Michigan State linebacker commit Darien Clemons said he will make the trip from Piqua, Ohio. While recovering from a torn ACL, he has been one of the top recruiters in the Spartans’ 2017 class.
Three-star Sandalwood (Fla.) CB Ameer Speed takes his official visit this weekend. He holds a long list of Power Five offers and is considered a North Carolina lean, per the 247Sports crystal ball.
Four-star Flint (Mich.) Southwestern DL Deron Irving-Bey will visit MSU again, per 247Sports’ Sean Scherer. He may well be Michigan State’s top remaining target in this class.
Three-star Thomas Jefferson (Pa.) LB Zane Zandier picked up a Michigan State offer on Oct. 19 and is wasting no time getting on campus for a visit.
Four-star Martin Luther King Jr. (Mich.) CB Ambry Thomas will visit Saturday, per 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong. Thomas has developed a strong relationship with the coaching staffs at MSU, Michigan and Florida.
Three-star Pickerington (Ohio) Central RB Morgan Ellison will join his 2018 teammates Xavier Henderson, Trenton Gillison and Jeremiah Wood, listed below. Ellison has yet to report a Michigan State offer.
Three-star Tennessee linebacker commit Jaquan Henderson visits Michigan State this weekend, per Scout’s Chad Simmons. Like 3-star prospect Nick Smith, Henderson is a linebacker commit the Spartans would like to flip.
Class of 2018
Four-star Michigan State DB Xavier Henderson will make yet another trip to East Lansing and bring a handful of Pickerington Central teammates. Henderson has stayed solid in his commitment and not visited any other schools.
Four-star Pickerington Central DE/TE Trenton Gillison will join Henderson. His offer list includes both Michigan State and Michigan. An Ohio State offer would certainly turn things up a notch in his recruitment.
Three-star Pickerington Central S Jeremiah Wood rounds out the 2018 trio that also visited for Michigan State’s September game against Wisconsin. He has not yet been offered by the Spartans.
Three-star Buford (Ga.) RB Christian Turner already holds offers from Louisville, Miami, N.C. State and Vanderbilt. Maybe this list grows after he gets to know the Michigan State coaches on Saturday.
Class of 2019
Five-star Belleville (Mich.) OT Devontae Dobbs makes his third trip to Michigan State this fall. The Spartans are prioritizing the No. 1 sophomore prospect in Michigan.
Class of 2020
Oak Park (Mich.) OG Justin Rogers confirmed he’ll visit Michigan State again. He considers MSU his top school and is working toward an offer.
A couple of commits will lead the charge for Michigan State this weekend. Four-star F Xavier Tillman will not be in attendance, but 5-star forward commit Jaren Jackson Jr. will, per MLive.com. He’ll be joined by 4-star forward commit Thomas Kithier.
They’ll have the opportunity to hang out with 5-star G Gary Trent, who takes his long-awaited official visit this weekend. Tillman’s teammate, Grand Rapids (Mich.) Christian junior G Duane Washington Jr., will be at the football game.
In the midst of an underwhelming football season, this game should bring as rowdy an atmosphere to East Lansing as there has been this year. We’ve yet to see how that translates to the field, but if the Spartans’ play doesn’t leave a positive impression, the crowd certainly should.
