Michigan State has suspended women’s gymnastics coach Kathie Klages in the midst of a sexual assault investigation into a former team doctor, according to an email acquired by Matt Mencarini of the Lansing State Journal.
More than 60 women and girls have told police that Larry Nassar sexually assaulted them, often during medical examinations related to gymnastics. Nassar served as the Michigan State team physician for nearly two decades before being fired in August.
Mike Rowe will be the team’s interim coach for the rest of the season, according to the email acquired by the State Journal.
The State Journal cites court documents that say Klages allegedly told a teenage girl who brought concerns about Nassar to her that reporting it could result in “serious consequences” for both parties.
Klages is in her 27th season as Michigan State’s head gymnastics coach. She’s a three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year.
