Tom Izzo’s list of 2016 honors just keeps growing.
Izzo – who was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame last month — was selected as this year’s recipient of the Dean Smith Award, an honor given annually by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. The award is given out to a coach who “embodies the spirit and values” of Smith, the North Carolina coaching legend.
“Tom Izzo represents everything the Dean Smith Award stands for,” USBWA president Ed Graney said in a press release. “Coach Izzo’s distinguished career and commitment to excellence represent the standards for which this award is defined, qualities Coach Smith held as paramount in making an impact on the lives of players on and off the court.”
Entering his 22nd season at Michigan State, Izzo has been to seven Final Fours and captured the 2000 National Championship. Izzo is the second coach to receive the Smith Award, following Georgetown’s John Thompson.
