He played with a heavy heart. But he did it for his grandmother.
One day after his grandmother died, Michigan State’s Gerald Holmes sparked the Spartans to a 36-28 win against Notre Dame. The Detroit Free Press’ Chris Solari reported on Holmes’ emotional couple days.
According to Solari, Holmes ran out of a team meeting on Friday in tears when he heard his grandmother died.
“I ran out, but I knew I had a game today,” Holmes said in Solari’s story. “I kind of steered the motivation from her to come out here and ball.”
Holmes rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns on only 13 attempts as Michigan State ended its losing skid to Notre Dame at three. His 73-yard TD run put Michigan State ahead 36-7.
