Michigan State left OG Tyler Higby sustained a broken ankle during the Spartans’ 49-0 win over Rutgers on Saturday and will miss the remainder of the season, coach Mark Dantonio announced Sunday night.
Speaking on a conference call with reporters, Dantonio said the redshirt freshman will have surgery this Thursday and is expected to be fully healthy by next spring.
Higby missed a lot of practice time last season as a true freshman with a shin injury, setting back his development. But on Sunday, Dantonio praised the work Higby did this season and sounded an optimistic beat for next season:
“Tyler is a redshirt freshman and he missed basically a lot of last year with a serious shin problem. So he really couldn’t start practicing probably until middle of (last) year, so he was behind a little bit. But I thought he rapidly caught up. He’s got great athletic ability, he’s a big guy, very athletic, shows power, very fluid and should be a great player for us here in the future.”
