Michigan State-Northwestern basketball preview
Tom Izzo has arguably his most talented group ever while at Michigan State and expectations were essentially winning a national title or bust. It’s still February, but as March Madness gets closer, the Spartans seem to be playing their best basketball at the right time.
Michigan State started the season with a 15-1 record but then lost two of its next three games. The Spartans, since that point, have won nine straight games, including a 68-65 victory over then-ranked No. 3 Purdue.
Izzo’s group is led in scoring by sophomore Miles Bridges, who many considered in the preseason to be the National Player of the Year. Bridges averages 17.3 points per game this season, while Nick Ward — another sophomore — averages 13.1.
Ward leads the team in rebounding at 7.5 per game, while Bridges averages 7.0. Freshman Jaren Jackson Jr. averages 6.1 rebounds per game as well.
The most impressive statistic about the Spartans is that each player of the team’s starting five — featuring Bridges, Ward, Jackson Jr., Cassius Winston and Joshua Langford — averages over 11 points per game.
Michigan State and Northwestern will be meeting for the first time this season when the two meet at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Saturday.
Northwestern one season ago made history by appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. The Wildcats made it to the second round before losing to Gonzaga, who ended up playing in the national championship.
Expectations for Northwestern weren’t at the same level as Michigan State, but much of the core for the Wildcats was returning for the 2017-18 season. With that said, the year has been a disappointment so far.
Northwestern started the season at 5-4 overall and then won four games straight. From that point on, the Wildcats have gone 6-8 and currently sport a 15-12 overall record. The team is also 6-8 in Big Ten play after going 24-12 last season and possessing a 10-8 record in conference.
The Wildcats’ last two games have resulted in a 16-point loss to Maryland and an overtime loss to Rutgers. Northwestern has a well-rounded team — like Michigan State — as four members average at least 11 points per game.
In last year’s contest between the two teams at Michigan State, the Spartans won, 61-52.
