Michigan State-North Carolina basketball preview
After losing 88-81 to Duke in the Champions Classic, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo rued his underwhelming record against the Blue Devils. He hasn’t been much better against North Carolina.
The Spartans have lost seven straight to the Tar Heels, including an 89-72 blowout in the 2009 national championship game. Michigan State last beat them in 2000 at home. Now-retired Jason Richardson led MSU with 16 points.
This time, North Carolina comes in undefeated with the distinction of being the defending national champion. But Michigan State holds the higher ranking and has the general favorite for national player of the year honors, Miles Bridges.
It won’t just be an exciting matchup because of the talent on the floor, but also because of the pace. Both teams run more than 75 possessions per game, ranking in the top 100 nationally. North Carolina has averaged 92.8 points per game compared to 84.4 from Michigan State.
Michigan State has found production from a multitude of places. Freshman Jaren Jackson Jr. already has a pair of double-doubles. Bridges, Matt McQuaid, Nick Ward and Cassius Winston have recorded 20-point games. Josh Langford scored a career-high 19 against Stony Brook.
Meanwhile, North Carolina has gotten an outrageous start from former walk-on Luke Maye. After averaging 5.5 points a year ago and sinking the game-winner against Kentucky to send the Tar Heels to the Final Four, he has put up 21.2 points and 10.8 rebounds in 5 games. He scored 28 and grabbed 16 rebounds to push UNC past Arkansas in the semifinals.
So this one should be a high-powered matchup that might be won by the team that tires out last.
