A win is always sweet, but for Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio, it was a little extra special.
The 42-17 victory over Washington State in the 2017 Holiday Bowl in San Diego, Calif., was Dantonio’s 100th at Michigan State.
He is now 100-45 as the head coach of the Spartans and 109-59 overall.
With his fifth bowl win, the coach extends his lead for most Spartans bowl victories as a head coach. He’s also won the most Big Ten Championships with three and is one of eight active coaches with 100 wins at their current school.
Dantonio took over the coaching job for the Spartans in 2007 after three years at Cincinnati and has led his team to a bowl game in every season but one. That season, 2016, the Spartans went 3-9, but the coach has been lauded for this season’s turnaround to 10-3.
With 100 wins, Dantonio is just 9 behind all-time Spartans wins leader Duffy Daugherty, who coached the team from 1954-72. With another season like this year, Dantonio could reach and possibly surpass that mark.
