Michigan State rebounded from a loss with a 17-7 victory against Maryland and rebounded in the latest Land of 10 Power Poll by rising to No. 4 in the rankings, released Sunday.
The Spartans (8-3, 6-2 Big Ten), now ranked 21st in The Associated Press Top 25, won a messy battle against the Terps in poor conditions at home. An Ohio State win officially took Michigan State out of the Big Ten East race, but coach Mark Dantonio’s team still could earn 10 wins this season.
The win pushed Michigan State past Michigan, which lost to undefeated Wisconsin on the road. The Spartans received third-place votes at the highest and sixth-place votes at the lowest.
Wisconsin remained atop the poll after beating the Wolverines. Along with holding the Big Ten’s lone undefeated record, the Badgers are the only team in the conference without multiple losses.
I ranked Michigan State fourth, right where the Spartans fell in the overall poll. Among the Big Ten teams with 3 losses or more, they clearly have the upper hand. The win Saturday showed that they wouldn’t let the debacle at Ohio State derail their season.
Next comes another game that Michigan State will be heavily favored to win. The Spartans head to New Jersey to take on Rutgers in their regular-season finale. The FOX broadcast begins at 4 p.m. ET.
