Michigan State was struggling. No one knew that more than Mark Dantonio.
At Tuesday’s press conference, the Spartans coach said the team was “sort of out there in the desert” before beating Rutgers 49-0 on Saturday. That stopped the losing streak at seven and gave Michigan State its first Big Ten win.
Now Michigan State (3-7 overall, 1-6 Big Ten) gets a visit from No. 2 Ohio State.
Here’s what Dantonio had to say Tuesday:
- On Ohio State: “When you look at them offensively, the first one you see is the quarterback (J.T. Barrett). … Curtis Samuel’s a guy who’s got almost 1,400 yards of offense, I think.”
- With more than two dozen players and coaches with ties to Ohio, that could be “extra motivation.”
- Dantonio said while DL Malik McDowell isn’t on the depth chart for the Ohio State game, that doesn’t mean McDowell is necessarily out. McDowell didn’t play in the Rutgers win.
- On senior day: “They all have two Big Ten Championship rings. They all have a Cotton Bowl ring. … They’ve accomplished a lot. That’s the thing I think they need to remember about this whole journey here.”
Dantonio: I've never gone into a game saying we're underdogs.
