Division II Northern Michigan has announced its coaching finalists. Yes, announced.
The school put out a list of five names its considering for its head coaching vacancy, including Michigan State offensive line coach Mark Staten. He will interview on Wednesday.
Staten has coached at Michigan State since 2006. He’s been a recruiting coordinator (2006-2011), tackles/tight ends coach (2006-2011) and offensive line coach (2011-present).
In 2015, Staten’s offensive line was named one of six finalists for the 2015 Joe Moore Award, given to the best unit in the country. It had two All-Americans in center Jack Allen and left tackle Jack Conklin. In 2014, Michigan State’s front gave up just 11 sacks, the third-fewest in FBS while paving the way for the best offense in school history.
Ferris State University defensive coordinator Kyle Nystrom, Grand Valley State defensive coordinator Nick Postma, North Carolina-Pembroke head coach Shane Richardson and Fairmont State head coach Jason Woodman are the other finalists.
Staten coached at Miami of Ohio, Ohio State and Cincinnati with Mark Dantonio before going to Michigan State.
