One of the best basketball recruits from Big Ten country will be making his college choice this week.
Mark Smith, a 4-star guard from Ewardsville, Ill., will announce his commitment at 7 p.m. ET Wednesday, according to Derek Piper of Scout. Michigan State, Illinois and Ohio State are among the possible landing spots for the 2017 shooting guard.
Smith is rated as the No. 74 player in the 2017 class and fourth-best recruit in Illinois. He’s been heavily recruited by his home state Illini, and if he went to Champaign it would be a huge boost to new coach Brad Underwood. Illinois recently lost 4-star big man Jeremiah Tilmon in this recruiting class.
For the Spartans, a pledge from Smith would provide a backcourt boost to a 2017 class that currently sits at two players: 5-star forward Jaren Jackson and 4-star forward Xavier Tillman. Michigan State also got big news when Miles Bridges announced he would return for his sophomore season. Tom Izzo’s club figures to be the Big Ten favorite heading into the 2017-18 season.
Smith visited Ohio State over the weekend. Ohio State’s 2017 class currently has two players: 4-star center Kaleb Wesson and 3-star point guard Braxton Beverly.
As of Monday afternoon, Smith’s 247Sports crystal ball was leaning in favor of Illinois.
