At least 120 sexual-abuse victims of former Michigan State doctor Larry Nassar released a petition Tuesday that pushes for the university to fire interim president John Engler. In the letter, the “sister survivors” state Engler, who took over in February following the resignation of former president Lou Anna Simon, has allowed a “culture of abuse” at the university to continue since taking office.
This is the latest attempt to oust Engler from his interim position. Last week, tensions rose over emails Engler sent to another university official in April. He condemned the lawyers of Nassar’s victims.
Two of Michigan State’s publicly elected trustees have encouraged Engler to resign.
The next board of trustees meeting will be held Friday.
Since Engler took over in February, Michigan State agreed to a $500 million settlement with the more than 300 known sexual-abuse victims. Nassar, who also was a doctor for USA Gymnastics, has been sentenced to up to 360 years in prison for his crimes.
