Former Michigan State basketball guard Keith Appling was arrested Sunday night for the third time since May.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Appling, a Detroit native, was pulled over around 9 p.m. on the city’s east side after pulling away from a traffic stop.
Appling was driving a 2013 Dodge Challenger, according to the Detroit News, and pulled off after officers initially pulled him over and noticed “a strong odor of marijuana.”
When officers pulled him over a second time, they noticed a Gucci bag that was in the back seat was no longer there, per the Detroit News report.
Officers apparently retraced their route and found the bag, which contained paperwork with Appling’s name on it. In the bag was a semi-automatic Beretta with “10 live rounds inside,” per the report.
Appling was arrested for fleeing police officers and also a gun charge. His previous two incidents this year also involved a gun.
Appling, who started 132 games in his career at Michigan State, played five games with the Orlando Magic last season and spent most of his time in the NBA Development League.
