EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State moved to 2-0 on Saturday with a 28-14 win over Western Michigan, but as expected, it did not prove enough to move the Spartans into the national rankings.
Coach Mark Dantonio’s team did, however, see a small increase in receiving votes in the Amway Coaches Poll. The Spartans have 2 receiving votes in the Coaches and one vote in the AP Top 25 Poll.
Previous rankings (AP/Amway Coaches Poll): NR/NR
New rankings (AP/Amway Coaches Poll): NR/NR
What it means: Michigan State can credit its performance against the Broncos, which had given top-5 USC a scare the week before, for the increased recognition. The Spartans defense still has not allowed a touchdown, and its only points allowed came off of a turnover.
Regardless, it will likely take multiple more wins for Michigan State to break into the rankings. That’s just what happens when you’re coming off a 3-9 season.
What’s next: Michigan State will get the weekend off and then return to action by hosting Notre Dame under the lights on Sept. 23. The game kicks off at 8 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on FOX.
