Dan Gilbert, a Michigan State alum and majority owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, is making a $15 million donation to Michigan State.
The donation was announced at a press conference Wednesday. The money will help renovate the Breslin Center and also support the Detroit Scholars Program and the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities.
“Michigan State has played a large role in both of our lives and we are honored to support the university. Coach Izzo and Mark Hollis have built Spartan basketball into one of the nation’s premier programs,” Dan Gilbert in a release. “Additionally, it is important that students of all backgrounds, including young Detroiters, realize their maximum potential and are exposed to the opportunities that higher education provides.”
Both Gilbert and his wife Jennifer are Michigan State graduates.
The Gilberts’ donation will help fund upgrades to the Breslin Center that involve:
- A new box office
- Tom Izzo Hall of History
- Addition of the Draymond Green strength and conditioning center
- Hydration station
- Lounges for players and recruits
- Alumni locker room
