Obi had a promising freshman season at Rice, averaging 11.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. After transferring to Duke and redshirting, however, he played in only 10 games 2015-16 and didn’t see the floor this past season.
The 6-foot-9, 256-pound big man from Nigeria will be eligible next season, and could provide a much-needed boost to Maryland’s frontcourt. The Terps ranked 11th in the Big Ten in rebounding margin last season.
Obi is the second Duke graduate transfer to land at Maryland in the past three years, as Rasheed Sulaimon averaged 11.3 points per game after transferring to College Park in 2015.
