Jermaine Carter Jr., one of Maryland’s top defensive players, will be back in College Park in 2017, the linebacker announced Tuesday.
As a redshirt junior this season, Carter recorded 101 tackles, nine tackles for loss and six sacks. He also had two forced fumbles and an interception. He was named honorable mention All-Big Ten by the conference media.

Carter graduated in December and could have declared for the NFL Draft with a year of eligibility remaining. However, at 6-f00t, 235 pounds, Carter is somewhat undersized for an NFL inside linebacker and was unlikely to be drafted. NFLDraftScout.com ranked him the No. 23 inside linebacker in the 2017 class.
Maryland’s season ended Monday with a 36-30 loss to Boston College in the Quick Lane Bowl.
The Terrapins begin the 2017 campaign against Texas, Sept. 2 in Austin.
