Cole Field House, the iconic former Maryland basketball arena, is about to undergo a stunning transformation.
On Thursday, the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore announced they are teaming up to create the Center for Sports Medicine, Health and Human Performance.
The Center is part of the larger Cole Field House project, which also includes a full-size indoor football field, two outdoor fields and advanced strength, conditioning and hydrotherapy centers. The building will also house the Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
The medical research facility will allow for further study of sports injuries and their treatment, specifically traumatic brain injuries. It will feature a new orthopaedic outpatient center.
The Washington Post reports that the project will cost $155 million, with the first phase to be completed next May. The school has already raised $51 million in private donations.
