“It is a great honor to be chosen to lead at the University of Maryland,” Evans said in a press release. “Since the day I arrived, I have been inspired by the student-athletes, coaches and support team that strive for success in Maryland Athletics, and I look forward to many successes ahead in our Big Ten era. I’m guided by the principle that we learn from our wins and losses, and I am eager to lead an athletics department that ultimately achieves greatness together.”
Evans previously served as the athletic director at Georgia from 2004-10. However, he resigned from the job shortly after a drunk driving arrest.
Maryland was also considering Temple AD Patrick Kraft and former Tennessee AD John Currie for the position, according to the Baltimore Sun.
Evans is taking the role as Maryland continues to review the death of 19-year-old football player Jordan McNair. Evans is scheduled to hold a news conference on Tuesday, and he will officially take over the full-time athletic director role on July 2.
