Spencer Lee, widely considered the No. 1 freshman wrestler in the country, will burn his redshirt year and be called up to Iowa’s main roster for the Hawkeyes’ dual against Michigan State on Friday, Lee told Hawk Talk Daily’s Darren Miller on Wednesday.
Lee, a three-time Pennsylvania high school state champion, had been wrestling unattached at 125 pounds this season, meaning he was competing at tournaments unaffiliated with Iowa’s official varsity team. He compiled a 6-1 record with three falls and three technical falls. His only loss, a 3-1 defeat to Oregon State’s Ronnie Bresser, came at last weekend’s Midlands Championships.
