IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa’s Sammy Brooks was in an unusual position Friday night.
Brooks, Iowa’s 184-pounder, usually competes near the end of matches. Instead, he was placed as the opening match opposite Wisconsin’s Hunter Ritter. Either way, Brooks dominated his match, winning by fall in 4:54 and propelling the No. 3 Hawkeyes past the No. 16 Badgers 33-8 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday night.
“It’s different,” Brooks said. “Now I’ve got to watch the guys and watch them kick some ass, so it’s a different feeling. But the job’s still the same. You go out there and do what you’re supposed to do.”
Brooks nearly pinned Ritter earlier in the second period with a cradle but turned him over.
“I just gave him a bar-arm,” Brooks said. “I don’t know really know what the name of it is. It’s some secret move.”
The Hawkeyes won eight of the 10 matches.
MATCH OF THE NIGHT
At 165, Iowa’s unranked Joey Gunther gave No. 3 Isaac Jordan (18-1) all he could handle but the Badger pulled out a 3-1 win in overtime. Gunther (13-5) forced the action in the final two periods of regulation, but Jordan scored on a single leg near the edge of the mat 30 seconds into overtime for the win.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR IOWA AND WISCONSIN
The Hawkeyes (9-2, 5-1 Big Ten) have bounced back with consecutive dual wins after losing to No. 1 Oklahoma State and No. 2 Penn State. No. 16 Wisconsin (3-5, 1-5) drops its fifth straight dual.

Top-ranked Thomas Gilman scored nine takedowns in a dominating 21-7 win against Wisconsin’s Jens Lantz at 125 pounds. Gilman (20-0) has scored bonus points in 18 of his 20 matches this year.
No. 2 Michael Kemerer (21-1) made quick work of Wisconsin’s Jared Scharenbrock with a fall in 55 seconds.
WHO STARRED FOR WISCONSIN
At heavyweight No. 2-ranked Connor Medbery (18-0) dominated Iowa’s Faraan Brantley, winning by technical fall at 18-1 in 5:04. Medbery scored 10 back points on Brantley, who wrestled his first match of the season.
