IOWA CITY, Iowa — No. 3-ranked Iowa closes out its Big Ten wrestling campaign Sunday afternoon against No. 6 Nebraska at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Five Iowa seniors will wrestle for the final time at home and will be honored after the dual. They include Thomas Gilman (125 pounds), Cory Clark (133), Topher Carton (141), Alex Meyer (174) and Sammy Brooks (184).
The group has matured over time, Iowa coach Tom Brands said, both on and off the mat.
“I remember the first academic meeting they had with (former associate athletics director) Fred Mims and they skipped out on him,” Brands said. “They didn’t think it was a big deal. They learned real quick that it was a big deal. A lot of times when you have that, you end up chasing that all the way to the end of their career. But that’s not the case with these guys. They’ve grown up, they’ve handled what’s thrown at them, they’ve become leaders. They’ve become pillars of this program.”
Gilman, Clark, Meyer and Brooks all are ranked and previously have earned All-American status.
“We’re really close,” Meyer said. “We’ve got a wide variety of personalities, but we love each other. We’ve been around each other so long. We’ve gotten so close. We do go to war every week with each other.”
“It’s worth something when you’re looking at guys that you coached, and it’s really worth something when they’ve grown up,” Brands said. “When you’re talking to them, they’re men. It’s a relationship and enjoyable.”
