This fall, Kinnick Stadium has christened a new tradition. At the end of the first quarter of each game, the entire crowd at Kinnick Stadium turns to wave at the brand-new Iowa Stead Children’s Hospital and the intensive-care patients who look down at the field.
FOX Sports produced a feature on the “Kinnick wave,” which aired Friday night on FS1. The 5-minute piece features interviews with Kirk Ferentz, as well as people at Iowa Stead.
“What a simple concept, yet so powerful,” Ferentz said in the video. “Like a lot of the good things that happen in life, they are so simple in nature, but the power and meaning of it is really significant.”
Said Steve Hepker, father of an Iowa Stead patient, “For us as parents and our children who are going through this, how much we appreciate what all these people are doing by turning and waving and standing and cheering. You almost feel like one of the football players themselves.”
