Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz had a heck of a night on Wednesday.
Not only did his Hawkeyes beat Boston College 27-20 in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, but he also got the team’s game ball in honor of his 143rd win, tying legendary coach Hayden Fry for the school’s record.
The moment was captured on the Iowa Hawkeyes Facebook page:
Athletic Director Gary Barta gave Ferentz the ball, saying he usually doesn’t interrupt the coach’s postgame speeches, but on Wednesday night he talked to the Hawkeye players.
“I’ve always said he’s the best coach in America,” Barta said. “Well tonight, you all helped him with 143 wins become the winningest coach in Hawkeye history.”
It looks like Ferentz welled up a bit after and held the ball up as his players embraced him.
