Ever wanted a house that looks like your favorite football stadium? It won’t be easy.
The Neighbors of Manville Heights Association filed a lawsuit Wednesday asking Iowa City officials to stop the construction of a house that looks like Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium, according to KCRG TV in Cedar Rapids.
Reed and Sandy Carlson have plans for the 7,500-square foot house that include stadium seating, stadium-style restrooms and a courtyard, KCRG reports. It will have brick siding and a replica press-box, too.
Neighbors worry it will become a “party house,” creating traffic and safety issues. They protested before the approval process, but the Iowa City board approved it anyway, saying “the property is not in a historic or conservation district, and staff has no authority to constrain the design of the structure other than existing building and zoning codes,” according to the Iowa City Press-Citizen.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen posted video with floor plans of the house in June.
“The idea that just because it looks like Kinnick Staduim it’s going to be a party house or whatnot is a misnomer,” Reed Carlson told the Press-Citizen in the summer. “Like I said to the city attorney in University Heights: ‘It’s a residential neighborhood. It’s zoned residential. You aren’t going to issue me a liquor license, so why are you concerned about what the house looks like?'”
